Kevin Coates
Kevin
Coates was born and has lived most of his life in Winterton,
Newfoundland. He got into wood carving after seeing an article on
caricature carving in a magazine.
His carvings reflect the history of the people who live in his community
in Newfoundland both past and present. Recently the Government of
Newfoundland and Labrador purchased a 'community' of his carvings for the
province's Permanent Collection. He was also recently featured in the
Telegram Newspaper. Kevin won the award for best new product at the
Atlantic Craft Trade Show in February 2005.
All of Kevin's carvings are carved from balsam fir. They are dipped in a
mixture of linseed oil, paint thinner and burnt umber oil paint then
painted with thinned acrylics. He uses wood from blown down trees. Kevin was recently commissioned to complete caricatures for Canada's 13 First Ministers.
Kevin's work can be found in many private collections.
