Doug Dorken
Doug
Dorken was born in 1950 spending most of his childhood in the
Halifax area. He joined the army when he was 18 years old, entering
the navy 4 years later. Doug served on destroyers and minesweepers.
He travelled around the world picking up carvings in the places he
visited. He retired after 27 years. As a civilian, Doug renovated and
sold several houses, sold real estate,
fished commercially, fish farmed and dove. He carved as a child and
started again after fishing ended for the winter seven years ago.
Doug has sold his carvings at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, The Teazer,
Five Fisherman Gallery, Holy Mackeral and The Spotted Frog Folk Art
Gallery.
His work is with collectors all across North America, England and France.
Doug regularly attends the Nova Scotia Folk Art Festival. His work was
featured in Saltscapes Magazine in February 2003. Doug has many hobbies
which include playing the bagpipes for the local legion, public and
private events.
Doug's carvings are all done on kiln dried pine or poplar. Buoys are
authentic, they have been used for fishing. "When you buy one you have a
piece of local history."
