He began carving as a child but became serious about his work in 1981. he has been employed as a clamm digger, fish plant worker, labourer, mill worker, mink rancher and fish plant worker in the Clare region of Nova Scotia. During the last few years, Mark took a few courses from The Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. He prefered to focus on his style of art and had to wait a year to get all of the new ideas out of his head so he could return to his love of carving folk art.
